Japan earthquake: Rescuers race to find survivors among fires. 

After a massive earthquake on New Year's Day killed at least 62 people in Japan, rescue attempts continue.

Homes collapsed, buildings burned, and highways were heavily damaged, impeding rescue efforts.

Noto peninsula in central Japan was the epicentre of the 7.6 quake.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said emergency responders were in a "race against time" to save people.

Wajima, on Noto's northern tip, is cut off from land routes. In Suzu, Ishikawa prefecture, mayor Masushiro Izumiya told Kyodo that 90% of residences were "completely or nearly completely destroyed".

The Japanese military has distributed food, drink, and blankets to evacuees. The authorities reported 57,360 evacuations. The impacted region receives tens of thousands of meals.

Aftershocks persisted Tuesday. Chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi advised "be alert" for more earthquakes "of an intensity of up to 7" next week. A 4.9 earthquake hit Ishikawa, 155 km south of Noto, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Japanese authorities decreased its Monday tsunami warnings. All Sea of Japan tsunami advisories were cancelled on Tuesday, eliminating the risk. Residents in Japan's impacted area have described the several-minute quake.

Toshio Iwahama, 82, of Nanao told the BBC that his wooden home partially fell. Though he had lived through several earthquakes, he had never felt this magnitude.

Briton Emma Ward, 41, who was skiing in Hakuba, said the quake hit "without warning" and forced her party to take refuge under a cafe table. She told the BBC that the vibrations were so strong that people fled the building. "Not knowing how powerful the earthquake will be was the worst. A terrifying event, "Ms. Ward remarked.
