Lainey Wilson on storytelling, Dolly, and self-made success

The American country music tradition has always been characterized by a nearly unmatched talent for storytelling.

From an early age, country music surrounded Lainey Wilson.

Her father, a guitarist, introduced her to musicians like Buck Owens when she was growing up in Baskin, Louisiana (population 211), where she first became interested in the narrative-driven songs of the genre.

Wilson took the time to hone his skills as a musician and storyteller in an age where notoriety can suddenly appear due to reality TV or social media sites like TikTok.

Wilson began writing songs at the age of nine, and two years later she began playing the guitar.

After relocating to Nashville in 2011, she gained notoriety for living in a camper trailer outside of a recording studio.

In 2018, she signed a major label and, three years later, her third studio album Sayin' What I'm Thinkin' helped her break through to the mainstream.

The past ninety-five days have been extremely busy. Wilson's fourth album, Bell Bottom Country, debuted in the top 10 of Billboard's Top Country Albums chart last fall.
